A smart battery system is usually associated with a home battery in which you store electricity from your solar panels. But Masterwatt now offers a thermal battery, the Charge, with a smart system that heats tap water at the ideal times and in the most ideal amounts possible. It was nominated for a BouwBeurs Award for it.
'The system works with dynamic energy prices,' says Elmer Gouw, one of the owners of Masterwatt. 'It heats the water in the Charge when the rates are low, so you always have cheap hot water.' The boiler and system were developed by Norway's OSO and was made suitable for the Dutch market by Masterwatt. "We are exclusive distributor in the Netherlands.
Risk of cold water
The Charge comes in sizes of 100, 200 and 300 liters. You can also get them as a "dumb" version, but then you can hang a separate box next to them, making them smart anyway. Elmer Gouw shows the app at the BouwBeurs, which allows him to control the system simply. For example, you can set what the risk of cold water is allowed to be. A lot of risk of cold water means you save more. If you want less risk, then more hot water is kept in stock and you also save less. 'I've had cold water once, but then my 12-year-old daughter had showered for an hour and a half, there's no stopping that,' he says.
You can also set the system to be self-learning. 'Then it starts looking at user behavior. Suppose you shower every day at 7 a.m., then the system will make sure there is enough hot water around that time.' You can also set, for example, the minimum amount of water at shower temperature. 'That is easy to set with a slider in the app,' Gouw explains. If you go on vacation or have guests, for example, you can adjust it very quickly. It's a good way to balance comfort and savings.
