Alliander tenders €1.6 billion for new cables

Network company Alliander, the parent company of grid operator Liander, wants to allocate more than 1.6 billion euros for new cables. For the organization, this is the largest tender ever for the supply of distribution and transmission cables for the medium and low voltage network.

A total of 45,000 to possibly 73,000 kilometers of cable is needed. According to Alliander, those cables are intended to connect electricity stations, but also to extend the neighborhood's electricity grid. Exactly who will do the job is not yet known. Alliander is aiming for at least seven suppliers. The final award of the tender, intended for the period 2026 to 2034, is scheduled for the end of 2025.

Liander is a grid operator in countries including Gelderland, North Holland and Friesland. The organization also expects to install and renew 23,000 transformer houses in neighborhoods until 2033. In addition, 48 new, large electricity distribution stations must be added and 49 expanded. Another 62 smaller electricity substations must be built and 82 expanded.

Considerable investments are currently being made by grid operators in grid reinforcement. This is because the demand for electricity is increasing rapidly, while problems with the grid are increasing. It is known that across the country thousands of companies are already on the waiting list for an electricity connection.
