Utrecht December 22, 2023 - At BouwBeurs 2023, Mark Kemna of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) will give a crash course in timber construction. Forest conservation organization FSC is a big proponent of using wood in construction. "Provided this is naturally certified wood. Because that means additional protection of well-managed forests. Timber construction also requires craftsmanship and good detailing in the design," says Mark Kemna. BouwBeurs 2023 will take place from Monday, February 6 to Friday, February 10 at Royal Jaarbeurs in Utrecht.

Timber construction on a huge rise

Mark Kemna is an enthusiastic storyteller when it comes to wood and forest. "Five years ago we also considered participating in BouwBeurs. But then we were still afraid of being snowed under in the violence of steel and concrete. Meanwhile, wood construction is on an enormous rise. So the time has come for us to make ourselves heard and seen. Because using wood in the right way still requires quite a bit of education. We would like to help the construction industry with that," Kemna explains. "To immediately clear up the biggest misunderstanding, FSC does indeed protect forests, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't use wood at all. In addition to being forest protectors, we are above all socially responsible. And construction really needs to become more sustainable. Then wood is actually the only right option: it absorbs CO2 and grows back by itself."

Rush course in wood construction

The crash course Wood Construction: Industrial Building with Wood can be attended on Monday, Feb. 6, from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 9, from 3:45 to 4:15 p.m. in the Tech Forum at Construction Fair 2023. Participation is free, registration is not required.
