To improve the safe storage of lithium-ion batteries on construction sites, Lithium Safety Containers will further implement advanced storage solutions at Dura Vermeer. With this partnership, Lithium Safety Containers will ensure that Dura Vermeer, in addition to an increased level of safety, at the same time complies with the latest guidelines and upcoming laws and regulations. The first containers are already in use at Dura Vermeer; this number is expected to increase significantly during 2025.
With the growing use of lithium-ion batteries across various sectors—ranging from consumer electronics to electric vehicles—the need for safe storage facilities has increased exponentially. In addition to the permanent installations provided by Dura Vermeer at job sites, Lithium Safety Containers’ solutions can be deployed in a modular fashion on construction projects. The containers are not only used to store batteries for power tools but also add significant value to the infrastructure by
providing charging capabilities for electric vehicles.
Technology
Incidents involving lithium-ion batteries can lead to serious fires and explosions, highlighting the need for adequate safety measures. When a lithium battery becomes unstable on the construction site, early detection is critical. A Lithium Safety Container not only detects smoke but also includes thermal, CO & hydrogen gas (H2) detection. Through the aerosol system in the container, the fire is suppressed for at least 90 minutes, giving the fire department crucial time to take the appropriate steps.
New regulations strengthen safety standards
In December 2023, the Administrative Environment Board (BOb) approved the Hazardous Substances Publication Series (PGS) 37-1 and PGS 37-2 guidelines. These guidelines provide comprehensive regulations for the safe handling of energy storage systems and the storage of lithium-ion batteries. The aim is to incorporate these regulations into the Decree on Activities in the Living Environment (Bal) by mid-2025, making them legally binding.
Innovative solutions through collaboration
Lithium Safety Containers and Dura Vermeer are combining their expertise to develop storage solutions that not only comply with existing PGS 37 guidelines, but also anticipate future legal requirements. These solutions are designed to minimize risks such as thermal runaway (overheated battery cell resulting in chain reaction) and provide protection against fire and toxic release.
Bram van Beers, CEO of Lithium Safety Containers, emphasizes, "Our partnership with Dura Vermeer enables us to offer leading safety solutions that are essential in today's technological landscape especially in the construction and infra sectors. Together we are setting a new standard for the safe storage of lithium-ion batteries."
Tobias Spijkers, Energy Manager at Dura Vermeer added: "Joining forces with Lithium Safety Containers allows us to offer our customers innovative and safe storage solutions. This cooperation underlines our commitment to safety and sustainability on all our projects."
