At the BouwBeurs, International sales manager Martin Dicke of the German company BKM Mannesmann explains in his best Dutch what those three bricks are doing in their booth.
'With our injection method developed especially for the construction industry, we solve moisture problems. By injecting brick and concrete with a liquid that includes kerosene and polymers, they become water repellent. We illustrate this with these bricks: you can see exactly which part has been treated.'
Taking into account moisture damage
BKM Mannesmann is a manufacturer of professional waterproofing systems for the rehabilitation of existing buildings. Dicke: "Moisture, especially if it occurs for a long time, can cause all kinds of damage. It weakens the structure, among other things because the masonry can crack due to leaching joints. Damp facades also affect the indoor climate: there is a greater chance of mold. With the increasing likelihood of prolonged and heavy rain, it is wise to consider moisture damage. Our method is excellent for existing construction. The kerosene displaces water from the pores of the building material and leaves a coating of polymer that prevents capillary penetration of water into the wall. The pores of the building material remain open for diffusion (colloquially: breathable).'
Environmentally friendly
The injected fluids are environmentally friendly and harmless to health. Dicke: 'Once the agent has done its job, the wall is dry and is guaranteed to remain so for 25 years. The treated material continues to breathe, restoring natural thermal insulation, and that has a beneficial effect on heating costs.'
