In 2025, zero-emission zones will be established in a large number of inner cities in the Netherlands. As a result, these cities will be closed to freight traffic from the construction industry, even though a lot of construction is taking place in these very cities. VolkerWessels Materieel & Logistiek is anticipating this, says CEO Ron Frazer. "Just by taking a smarter approach to logistics, you save 70 percent in emissions."

Logistics in construction is traditionally an understudy. Necessary materials are ordered and then delivered to the construction site where they lie waiting to be used. This is not always well thought out and, according to Ron Frazer, this led to more and more problems. So in 2014, they began to deal with it differently at VolkerWessels Materieel en Logistiek.

"If we don't have the right stuff in the right place at the right time, we can't build that much either. But traditionally we randomly drive a lot of trucks downtown, we fill up those construction sites without knowing when we need the building materials. And when we need it, it's often obsolete. It gets in the way, it's unsafe, and there's not enough room at all for it on the construction site. Inner-city construction sites are also getting smaller and smaller. So for that reason alone, it pays to think better about it in advance."
